Founded in 1895 in South Devon, the firm expanded throughout the West Country during its first fifty years.

From this base Hills moved into South Wales opening a Cardiff office in 1945. The London office was established in 1970 and expanded following re-organisation to become the Company’s largest office.  In the following two decades offices were opened in Bristol, Exeter, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Shrewsbury, Poole, Plymouth and Penzance.

During the 1950’s the Company expanded steadily, undertaking university projects, hospitals, housing, industrial developments and major publicly funded road, office, and community projects.  In more recent years Hills has developed working relationships with several national retail chains and now has a substantial market share in shopping, food retailing and hotel work.

Overseas work undertaken by the Company since the mid-1970s has comprised a variety of building and civil engineering projects in Europe, the Middle East, and in North and West Africa. For several years Hills had a separate company in Iran, and was heavily engaged in work in that country until the revolution in 1978.  Joint venture companies have been set up in Canada and the USA, with an Oil and Gas division operating out of the UAE.

Hills were first involved in offshore oil and gas development in the early 1970s and, subsequently, a separate division was formed to handle the expanding and specialised nature of this work sector.

In 2002 Hills purchased March Project Management further enhancing our ability to offer project management services through from investment appraisal to completion of project.

2007 saw the purchase of A Edwin Bryant + Associates to enable an effective service to be provided form a West Cornwall base.

Early in 2014 Hills merged with HartQS bringing experience and knowledge of high profile bespoke commercial and residential projects, with state of the art green credentials adding to Hills’ already extensive project portfolio and further strengthening its long standing reputation in the QS arena.

Hills have consolidated the firm and now operate from four strategic offices in the South of England; Croydon, Exeter, Milton Keynes and Penzance.
